A Strong History

Marais & Smith is an accounting and audit firm formed in 2005, built on principles of professionalism and integrity. We provide professional audit, advisory and tax services to a diverse client base within the Eastern Cape.

We are committed to providing guidance to our clients on important operational and financial matters that advance their business goals. We strive to deliver excellent service that places a premium on ensuring that our valued clients are attended to with punctuality, professionalism, confidentiality and with the utmost integrity.

The firm of Marais & Smith Chartered Accountants was formed as a direct result of the withdrawal of the assurance division (audit and accounting) of Deloitte from East London.

We, having identified the need to continue to service the existing client base of Deloitte, approached the Executive Board of Deloitte with the intention of purchasing the East London Practice office. On 1 June 2005, we opened the East London practice office of Marais & Smith Chartered Accountants.

All Partners are Chartered Accountants and have many years of experience in the delivery of professional audit, accounting, taxation, financial advisory, and consulting services to all spheres of business.

We are proud of our team of approximately 30 quality individuals specializing in various aspects of our service delivery.

Loren Smith

Loren brings with her 17 years of experience and a wealth of knowledge of the business environment in the Eastern Cape. Loren previously worked at Deloitte East London where She gained both national and international experience.

Her clients include professional bodies, manufacturing, retail companies, individuals, Trusts, municipalities, public entities and tertiary institutions. Currently, she is a member of several Audit Committees, furthermore, she is the current Chairperson of the Performance Audit Committee of Amathole District Municipality.

Loren performs a number of audits for both private and public sector in the Eastern Cape. These clients range from owner managed to various shareholdings.

Rebekah Conway

Rebekah Conway

Rebekah completed her training contract at PWC Inc where she was a senior until she joined Marais & Smith in 2013. She has over 11 years’ experience performing internal audits, consulting services, providing technical accounting, advisory and assurance services.

Rebekah is responsible for managing the internal audit and consulting departments which includes project management of audits and personnel, providing training to article clerks, the preparation and presentation of findings to audit committee and maintaining and building strong, cooperative relationships with clients.

She has a hands-on approach for all clients and prides herself in transfer of skills for the improvement of internal controls within entities.
